Then there's a lot of buildup to their big fight, but the final confrontation is over in pages and has a very underwhelming conclusion. You get some vague ominous hints about a big bad with connections to Sunny's past, but the villain is never really fleshed out or allowed to interact much with Sunny. It's mostly just descriptions of locations and mundane conversations about stuff like food. The majority of the book isn't even Sunny's progression as she levels up her powers. For most of the book, there's plenty of writing but barely anything happens. In general, Akata Witch feels like a whole lot of exposition and barely any plot. The Plot: Unfortunately, the plot is where this book really struggles. These descriptions can feel a little unnecessary and wordy, but I appreciated them. Thoughtful care is taken to discuss everything from the terrain to the food to the fashions.

You really get the feeling that much of Akata Witch is a love letter to Nigeria. The best part of the writing is simply the author's descriptions of Nigeria. There are some beautifully evocative passages, but there are also some sections that feel a little clunky and choppy. Overall, fascinating world building and interesting themes mostly make up for a somewhat lackluster plot and uneven tone. It could also work as a New to You Author or a Witches bingo square.Īkata Witch is often billed as "Nigerian Harry Potter," but this book about a girl discovering her magical powers still manages to be somewhat unique.
